Teacher Hired In
New York School
NEW YORK -(NNPA)-A colored first-grade teacher, who was dismissed from the Orangeburg, S. C., public school system because she would not support segregated schools, was hired here Tuesday and assigned to teaching first grade in Public School 90 at 147th Street near Eighth Avenue.
Her employment was disclosed by her husband, the Rev. Alfred Isaac, pastor of the Union Baptist Church in Harlem. He had been dismissed as assistant professor of history at South Carolina State College.
He said the White Citizens Council obtained his dismissal because he worked for desegregation of South Carolina public schools.
REFUSED TO SIGN STATEMENT
Mrs. Isaac was dismissed as a teacher in the Duncan Memorial School in Orangeburg in 1955, her husband said, after she had refused to sign a statement declaring that she would uphold segregation.
A year later Mr. Isaac lost his job. He remained as pastor of the New Mount Zion Church in Orangeburg, however. Mrs. Isaac went to her native Maryland and got a job there.
Last June Mr. Isaac was offered the pastorate of the Union Baptist Church here. He resigned from the Orangeburg pulpit and assumed full charge of his new assignment here on Sept. 1.
