SHOOTING AND ESCAPING.—A Mexican by the name of Trinidad was arrested by Sheriff Burwell and Deputy Sheriff Reynolds, in this city on Wednesday night on a charge of horse stealing at Clarks-ville, in this county, sometime since. He was arrested by an officer of Amador county for the same offence, but escaped from him. The officers took him to a saloon on Main street for the purpose of procuring an interpreter. While there the prisoner unobserved obtained a pistol—a six-shooter—from some of his countrymen and started to run. He was pursued by officer Reynolds. He deliberately turned on the officer and fired, the shot taking effect, inflicting a severe flesh wound under the arm. Reynolds still pursued him, and he again turned and fired, the ball hitting Reynolds in the abdomen, passing around and lodging against the back bone. Reynolds then fired two shots, and it is supposed that one of them took effect. The Mexican staggered but soon regained his feet and made off, and has not since been heard of. Reynolds is doing well and will recover. He is an excellent officer, a terror to the scoundrels that infest our city, and his speedy recovery is most earnestly prayed for.
