Truman Asks For Drivers' Tests

WASHINGTON, D. C. (NNPA).

In addressing the opening session of his highway safety conference, Wednesday President Truman appealed for a tightening of traffic regulations by state and local authorities so every "nut or moron" can not get a driver's license simply because he can pay the fee.

During the speech Mr. Truman recalled that while he was in the Senate that he made studies of the traffic situation and discovered that more people had been killed in traffic accidents than in all of the wars in the nation's history. He said that he discovered that more people were permanently injured from traffic accidents than from both World Wars. The damage to property in traffic is "never less than $1,000,000,000," he said.

The President stated that the Federal Government did not plan to encroach upon states' rights but, on the other hand he said that the government could not be expected to sit idly by if the traffic toll continues unchecked.
