PORTLAND, January 4.

On Tuesday last the inhabitants of this town met agreeably to adjournment, and the Committee appointed for the purpose, reported a Petition to Congress, stating certain grievances, and praying that they might be redressed.

The Petition was read, paragraph by paragraph, and then voted in gross, without a single amendment.

A motion was made, and strongly supported by Stephen Hall, Esq. to forward the abovementioned Petition to the Hon. Fisher Ames, Esq.--which passed in the affirmative.

Instructions were then given to D. Davis, Esq. our Representative, to use his endeavors in the General-Court, that the whole of the Excise may be abolished.
