Mr. Van Buren. Gov. Reynolds, of Missouri, recently addressed a letter to the Ex-President, enclosing the proceedings of the Missouri Legislature, proposing him as the candidate of the democratic party at the next presidential election. Mr. Van Buren replies, that in regard to the next Presidential contest there is an abundance of time for selecting the candidate; that he has nothing more to ask for himself, and would prefer that some one of the other members of the party to which he belongs, who have merited but not yet received the highest honors of the republic, should be selected; that for himself and his political friends, the noble and patriotic sentiment, 'every thing for the cause, nothing for men,' will be universal.
