Full Text

June 9. In the great Room at Vauxhall a large historical Painting has been lately put up, representing the Surrender of Montreal in Canada, to the victorious Arms of Great Britain, commanded by Major General Amherst. This Officer in the Regimental, is the capital Figure in the Piece : He stands at the Front of his Tent, with some Attendants, holding in his hand a Paper, supposed to be the Articles of Capitulation. On the Ground, at his Feet, are a Pair of French Colours, as Emblems of Conquest ; before him, is a Group of Figures, supposed to be Inhabitants of Montreal come to supplicate Mercy, who, we may imagine, are in Want of Subsistence, by a Basket full of Loaves being placed at his Side, which he seems to order shall be distributed amongst them. On a commemorating Stone, at one Corner of the Piece is the monumental Inscription :

POWER EXERTED
CONQUEST OBTAINED,
MERCY SHEWN !
M, DCC, LX.

At the opposite Corner is a Cannon mounted on its Carriage, on which is seen flying a British Ensign. This Painting is said to be done by the ingenious Mr. Hayman; and the Room it is believed will be further ornamented with other Paintings of the same historical Kind.
