A Chicago telegram of the 17th says:—An accident occurred last night near Lemon, on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The incoming freight train collided with the South bound express passenger train, almost entirely wrecking the latter killing six persons outright, and fearfully injuring thirty-seven others, many of whom will die. Numbers were injured by being burned badly. Others were scalded by hot water from the locomotive boilers. Surgeons have been sent for to go to the wrecked train. It is impossible to give full particulars at present. Among those dangerously injured is Hon. J. W. Smith, Warden of the Illinois State Penitentiary.
A subsequent dispatch gives the number of killed 1, and wounded 35. No Southerners among them. The blame is said to attach to the engineer and conductor of the coal train, who moved contrary to the regulations. Both have disappeared.
