NEGRO YOUTH QUALIFIES, ENTERS NAVAL ACADEMY

Annapolis, Md. - Having qualified scholastically and passed the physical test, James L. Johnson Jr., Negro youth, of Chicago appointed by the Representative Arthur Mitchell of the First Illinois Congressional district was admitted to the Naval Academy today. He is the first member of his race to become a midshipman since just after the Civil War, and none has ever been graduated from the Naval Academy.

Midshipman Johnson, assigned to quarters in Bancroft Hall, was one of forty-five midshipmen admitted during the day, bringing the class to 175. He formerly attended Dunbar high school, Washington, D.C.
