Yearly Supply Run
The North Star, Alaska Native Service supply ship, arrived in Juneau this morning southbound from its yearly supply run to Barrow.
The supply ship took part in the recent search for the army tug MT 328 that was lost in the Bering Sea. The tug was found in a sinking condition by the North Star 25 miles from Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, said Capt. Charles H. Salenjus of the North Star. The two men reported aboard the tug had transferred to the freighter Kotzebue that had been towing the tug, the captain said.
The North Star is scheduled to leave late this afternoon for Wrangell where approximately 20 tons of reindeer meat will be delivered to the service school there. Reindeer were slaughtered in the annual roundup on Nunivak Island. The ship left Seattle on August 5 and is scheduled to arrive back in its home port Nov. 19.
Max Penrod, head of the service education division, boarded the North Star at Old Harbor on Kodiak Island.
"This was the worst trip because of weather that I have made in my 20 years sailing on the service supply ships," Capt. Salenjus said.
