CO-OPERATION IN ROAD BUILDING
The preliminary viewing of the proposed scenic highway over the Cascades joining Yakima and Pierce counties corroborates the statements many times made that such a road would prove one of the most attractive tourists routes in the Pacific northwest. In these days when the whole country is waking up to the need of good roads, not only for the purposes of transportation of products. but for the accommodation of tourist travel it is a matter of prime importance that such a highway should be constructed.
It is proposed now to go before the state legislature with a bill which plans for the construction of the proposed road connecting the middle section of the state with the western counties, by means of some co-operation on the part of the counties effected supplemented by state aid. The plan is feasible and practical. It is in line with the progressive development in road building now being pushed in other states. and should meet with the hearty support of all members of the legislature,
Those who are forecasting the tourist travel to the Pacific coast during the Panama exposition are predicting that never in the history of the country will there be such a demonstration of over-land travel as will be seen during the time of the exposition. Motoring for pastime and for pleasure is now at its height and will be the popular method of travel to San Francisco and other points during the Panama exposition.
The fact that this travel is expected has stirred the country to road building as it has never been stirred before. A few main highways will catch the most of this travel. and one of the routes selected will be through the Yakima valley and over the Cascades if the proposed route is open for travel by that time. This phase of the matter should be presented at the time the measure is before the legislature. The state of Washington will have one of the finest scenic routes on the continent to offer motor tourists if the proposed road is completed according to the present preliminary surveys.
It will be a matter of state pride to have this done, as well as a convenience to the citizens who will find their local interests served by such a line of communication.
