A dark cloud gathered near the earth six miles west of Mason City, forming a huge boat shape with three columns connecting to clouds, charged with electricity issuing sparks like musket fire. It moved slowly at five miles per hour with rotary motion tearing up vegetation over a 20-50 foot wide, three-mile path. Air was sultry beforehand, attributed to electrical influences resembling water spouts. Inhabitants watched in terror; site visited by hundreds.
