By capt. Nye, of the late privateer brig Avon arrived on Thursday at this port from Barbadoes, we have been favored with the following particulars of her cruise--
"Left Boston 21st January--on the 29th recaptured American schr. Mercury laden with flour and lard, a prize to H. M. ship Pomone, ordered her for Havana, her original port of destination. On the 9th Feb. captured British schr. Fame, from Halifax bound to Barbadoes, laden with fish, ordered her for Martinique.
Same night captured a small schr. from Surinam with coffee before we could unload her, H. M. ship Venerable hove in sight, nearing us very fast: we abandoned our prize, after putting on board all our prisoners. On the 25th Feb. made a ship on our lee bow with a schooner in chase, set all sail for her at 9 A. M. when within 4 leagues of Barbadoes set English colors and bore up for her, when she answered us, but could not get near enough to reach her with our shot, until Meridian when the Island of Barbadoes 3 leagues from us, a 74 bore down upon our weather quarter.--As we could not clear the island of Barbadoes without hauling immediately on the wind, and in the event of capturing the ship could not save her, gave her a raking broadside and then abandoned her. She proved to be the ship Puchehall, from London for Jamaica, with a cargo of ordnance stores, &c. - On the 9th March, captured a mail boat from St. Thomas's via St. Kitts bound to Antigua from whom we learned that 6 ships were laying at St. Kitts ready to join convoy at St. Thomas's manned the captured boat with 20 men under Mr. Leech sailing master, with orders to cut out said ships
On the 10th, made two sail to leeward bore up in chase--when within 3 leagues found them to be sloops of war, hauled on our wind from them--At 2 P. M. found them gaining on us--started our water hove over our deck spars and anchors--As S, one of the sloops within gun shot commenced firing--Set our colors, and gave them a broadside. The action continued until half past 5, when they succeeded in cutting away our haylards. sails and rigging mainmast, trisail-mast and main boom of. The other sloops of war coming up fast--and our vessel being in a disabled state, we were compelled to haul down our colors, after which we received two broadsides which killed 1 and wounded 6 of our men---At 6 was taken possession of by H. M. S. Barbadoes and Columbia, the former of 17, the latter of 18 guns, with a complement of 110 men each. The Barbadoes lost 15 killed and 3 wounded--Our loss 1 killed and 6 wounded (after we had struck The mail boat which we manned out, was also taken by the Columbia. We were ordered for Barbadoes and arrived on the 14th ult."
