CAMP DAVID, Md. (AP) - President Kennedy and former President Eisenhower conferred on the Cuban crisis Saturday. When it concluded, Eisenhower called on all Americans to support the President in his stand on foreign affairs.
Kennedy's purpose apparently was to help rally strong national support for whatever further steps he thinks this country must take in the Cuban crisis.
Speaking briefly with newsmen after the talks, Kennedy said he invited Eisenhower in to "bring him up to date on recent events." Kennedy said he also sought the benefits of Eisenhower's "thoughts and experience."
Eisenhower was asked if he supported Kennedy's outspoken position on Cuba. Eisenhower did not answer directly, but said:
"I am all in favor of the United States supporting the man who has to carry the responsibility for our foreign affairs."
Just before that Eisenhower was asked what he had to say about his conversation with Kennedy.
"It is very nice to be in a position where you are not expected or really even allowed to say anything," Eisenhower replied.
