Unique Gift of Confederate Veteran to Tifton Chapter U. D. C.
Columbus, Ga., May 27.—Lizzie Rutherford Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, has just received a unique gift in the form of a Confederate flag beaded on a buckskin, the work of a Sioux Indian woman in far-off Dakota. The flag is the gift of James A. George, a Confederate veteran of Deadwood, S. D., who was awarded the Confederate cross of honor by the Columbus chapter and who was the recipient of other courtesies at its hands.
The buckskin upon which the bead-work is done is from the body of a black-tailed buck, killed in the Black Hills mountains. The skin was dressed by a Sioux woman, and another Sioux woman, Mrs. R. O. Pugh, of Pine Ridge, Sioux Indian Reservation, did the bead-work.
Mrs. Pugh had never seen a Confederate flag and had to work only by the description given her, and the work is remarkably accurate under the circumstances.
