A performance was given Monday night at Maguire's, for the benefit of the Odd Fellows of this city. The performers were composed of an amateur troupe, gotten up for the occasion. Of course, several printers and local editors were of the number. Every seat was filled and standing room closely packed. The receipts will probably reach $3,000; many who bought tickets were not present. An entertainment of this character is really entertaining as well as profitable. The audience are always prepared to think well of everything produced, whether well acted or poorly burlesqued. Two-thirds of the seats in the house were occupied by ladies, and really for a time I forgot that I had been to the altar Hymenial—first looking at one and then at another, falling in love with a number, and finally setting my affections on one particularly, conjecturing the mode of an interview, and all that sort of thing, when all at once, thunder and lightning crossed my love-fit, that I had violated the tenth commandment. The fair sex presented such a lovely appearance that my thoughts overcame me. I immediately sat down and wrote a confession of the fact to my better-half, asking forgiveness, which I have no doubt, will be satisfactory.
