REAL SITUATION OF
"OLD" ENGLAND.

From the (London) Morning Post, of Sept. 14.

"No situation can be more awful or critical than that of the British Empire at the present moment. By the faults or misfortunes of Ministers, we are brought into that deplorable dilemma, in which peace is a dishonor and disadvantage, and war certain ruin. Another year's contest will add at least seventy millions to the National Debt of England, which will cause the gross debt to approach Five Hundred Millions sterling! Under such a stupendous load in the nature of things a nation must sink. The prospect is alarming indeed. Nothing but peace can retard that shock which may be our dissolution, and to obtain peace, it is apparent, that we must surrender all our conquests, the fruits of such a prodigious waste of blood and treasure, and by giving up Gibraltar and the Cape of Good Hope, lay the keys of India and the Mediterranean at the feet of the enemy!!

The best informed persons declare, that they cannot perceive any means by which the Empire can be rescued from the misfortunes by which she is threatened. Very little is to be expected even from a change of men.. So completely have our affairs been damned by the present set of Ministers, that were Mr. Fox called in, he could do no more than make a scandalous peace. But the public would have consolation in the assurance, that a peace made by him would be sincere and permanent, inasmuch as he has uniformly condemned the war, both in its principles and prosecution: & there would be no danger of the British Government relapsing into those errors which have brought our fortunes to so low an ebb. A negociation under the auspices of Mr. Fox, therefore is the last remaining chance which is left for our salvation."
