Between 11 and 12 at night, a man on horseback rushed from a hedge and struck at Mr. Jones's footman, then the second postillion (hitting the coach), and later the servant over the eye. Mr. Jones fired at the approaching man, wounding him. The man was found wounded off the road, taken to the King's Head at Longford, identified as John Tillier, a local farmer known for similar drunken behaviors on the road. He had left the inn on foot, returned for a horse, and rode out onto the heath.
