From captain Adams of the sch'r Edith and Nancy, in 28 days passage from Aux Cayes, we are politely favored with the following account. Although it is disagreeable in its nature, it is, nevertheless, our duty to lay it before our readers.
On the 25th of last month got under way in company with the brig Hope, capt. Gardner, sch'r Vigilant, captain Helms, sch'r Ann, capt. Dobbin, of Baltimore; sch'r Citizen, capt. Wason, of New-York, under convoy of the armed ship Mary, of Baltimore, capt. Anderson. About six hours after fell in with five privateers, 3 large and 2 small sch'rs, which gave chase to the vessels under convoy; at the same time appeared an English vessel, supposed to be a sloop, which was taken by one of the privateer schooners. The Edith and Nancy with the other vessels, sailing with a fresh breeze before the wind, got clear of any interruption from the privateers, but captain Adams saw one of them about five o'clock in the evening bear down towards the sch'r Ann, and board her, while the others continued in chase of the Mary, attempting to board her but was repulsed, getting so warm a reception that even after dark a constant fire of musketry was easily observed— The vessels under her convoy immediately crowded sail and made the most of a favorable breeze which at that moment sprung up—During the whole of the transaction none of the privateers hoisted any other colours than those of the Island of Hayti.
