RABBI FRANKLIN
DINNER SPEAKER

The 21st annual formal initiation banquet of Kappa Delta Pi, national honor society in education for junior and senior men and women of high scholarship and professional promise, was Saturday evening in Charles McKenny Hall and featured a talk by Rabbi Leo M. Franklin of the Temple Beth El, Detroit.

The speaker, whose topic was "Light at Eventide", said that today is like eventide for it is dark and it seems as though light is not coming, but, he emphasized, there must always be a hope for the future.

Wilbert McKeachie, Davisburg, president of Kappa Delta Pi, was the presiding officer.

Mrs. Martha Walsh Marshall, Dearborn, was the toastmistress.

Miss Mary Purchase, Muskegon Heights, gave the welcome to the neophytes and Zigmund Niparko, Hazel Park, gave the response.

Miss Josephine Hempstead, Oxford, was announced by William Cruikshank, Michigan Normal alumnus and instructor in special education here, as the recipient of the scholarship annually given by an unknown donor.

Miss Frances Lawrence, Spring Arbor, and Edward Bowles, Detroit, sang two excellent vocal duets.

The group sang "God Bless America".

Preceding the banquet, the formal initiation of new members was conducted in the formal lounge.

Dr. Harvey L. Turner, sponsor of Kappa Delta Pi, was assisted in the initiation ceremony by the following student members of the society: Mr. McKeachie, Mr. Bowles, Miss Lawrence, Miss Ila Shick, Davison, Miss Drucilla Ransom, Pontiac, and Miss Purchase.

Juniors initiated include: Miss Betty Baker, Detroit; Miss Betty Despres, Manistee; Miss Alice Dunham, Royal Oak; Miss Virginia Dykhuis, Holland; Norwood Eastman, Cass City; Miss Harriett Emery, River Rouge; Miss Eileen Granskog, Stonington, Miss Phyllis Griggs, Pontiac, Miss Mabel Hard, Addison; Miss Alice Heck, Ypsilanti; Miss Josephine Hempstead, Oxford; Miss Phyllis Lafoy, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Zigmund Niparko, Hazel Park; Miss Elsie Purchase, Muskegon Heights; Miss Dorothy Roe, Plymouth; Donald Riddering, Melvindale; Miss Ormae Sinn, Elsie; Miss Marie Turner, Ypsilanti; Rolland Langerman, Birmingham, and Miss Margaret Esler, Ypsilanti.
