Full Text

If we may credit the statements of some of our cotemporaries, the evacuation of Walcheren has been determined upon, upon the representation of general Don, who is said to have declared that, "if his majesty's ministers command him to attempt the retention of the island, he will sacrifice his life in its defence without a murmur; but he feels it to be his duty, both to government and to the brave army on the station, to represent the urgent expediency of evacuating it; and unless this determination be adopted without delay, the greatest difficulties may arise in effecting the embarkation of the sick."
