Effort to Avoid War
About the best check-up on the situation in Europe, where the Russian blockade of Berlin continues, is the statement of Secretary of State George C. Marshall, who insists that "We will not be coerced or intimidated" and adds that we "will proceed to invoke every possible resource of negotiation and diplomatic procedure to reach an acceptable solution to avoid the tragedy of war for the world."
The net result of the Secretary's remarks is that the United States will stand on its rights but that it will seek to avoid war. This, apparently, puts the question back in the hands of Russia and it remains to be seen whether the Russians want to risk war over the possession of Berlin.
