S. P. Dodges Amter Challenge; Ford Speaks In Brownsville Tonight
NEW YORK.-Henry Shepard, Negro worker and Communist candidate for lieutenant-governor of New York, was attacked for the second time Monday evening by Tammany cops, in the campaign of terrorization against the workers and their candidates.
Shepard was distributing leaflets, announcing the Red Ratification Rally, at 139th St., on the corner of 130th Street and Lenox Avenue, with three other campaign workers, when three uniformed thugs charged on them swinging clubs. The workers who had been taking the leaflets were first driven up into a building by the cops, who then turned their attention on the distributors, and beat them with their clubs.
The leader of the cops was recognized by Shepard as the same one who arrested him June 22, during a protest demonstration before the Emergency Relief Bureau Office, 271 W. 127th Street.
On that occasion, Shepard was sentenced to five days in jail.
Waldman Evades Challenge
Late Tuesday afternoon, no word had been heard from the Socialist Party or from Lewis Waldman, their nominee for governor of New York, in answer to the challenge issued Saturday by Israel Amter, Communist candidate for the same office to debate with him in Utica tonight on the campaign issues and the election platforms of both parties.
Arrangements were proceeding for Amter's scheduled campaign meeting in Utica Tuesday night. Wednesday, he will speak in Syracuse, Thursday in Binghamton, Friday in Endicott, and Saturday in Ithaca.
Ford, Weinstone at Big Rally
James W. Ford, Negro worker and candidate for vice-president, and W. W. Weinstone, candidate for U. S. Senator will be the principal speakers at the Red Election Rally at the Coney Island Stadium on July 9, the United Front Election Campaign committee announced yesterday.

Two mass recitations, "Scottsboro" and a new piece entitled "Red Election," by Victor Jerome will be presented by the Proletbuhne, as well as special numbers by the "Red Dancers."
