A PORTRAIT

Citizens of New-York, a leading democratic paper, sketches the following portrait of THOMAS PAINE—who, if not the author, is a liberal contributor to a Jacobin paper, called the "New-York Public Advertiser."

"We will recollect that when he [Henry R.] was returned from France, I had an interview with him, in which amongst other things he told me that he had seen in Paris, Tom Paine, that pestilential old wretch, whose carcass that it might not offend the neighboring air is incessantly steeped in brandy; yes, this bane of the moral world was then in a garret in Paris, hatching rebellion against his God."
