Shanghai, Sept. 3.—Two additional heavy earthquakes visited Japan today adding to the already terrorized empire. Fear and pandemonium reigns supreme while the trembling of the earth today was responsible for the destruction of five hundred of the scant number of remaining homes in the vicinity of Tokyo. The scene is described as maddening. Shooting of looters and other persons on slightest provocation is reported in the late dispatches.
Princes Yamashita and Kato of the Imperial family, met death when the building in which they were in at that moment—crumbled.
The Pacific Mail Steamship offices received a wireless today from the steamer President Lincoln stating that the steamer Lima Maru, a Japanese vessel, sank in Yokohama harbor.
The building in Tokyo which withstood the terrible earth shocks are being dynamited to check the spread of flames. The water system was demolished by the rolling of the earth and dynamiting is the only means of alleviating the quick spread of the flames.
Individual burial of the dead is impossible. Corpses are heaped up in a huge pile and cremated.
The governments of the respective nations of the world are today aiding stricken Japan. Chinese vessels with food, water and clothing are nearing the scenes of disaster. Millions of people in the most popular cities of Japan were struck hardest by the disturbances, being without the means to sustain life.
It is feared that unless relief on a huge scale is provided, diseases cannot be checked sufficiently to prevent a general plague.
