A SKELETON COMES TO LIGHT

Man Appears on Island Who Was Shot at Several Times by A. D. Kingsbury

"Murder will out," and this is a story stranger than any fiction related by Zane Grey, Conan Doyle, or Victor Hugo. It is the story of the meeting of two men for the first time, after a gun duel fought fifty seven years ago.

With apologies to Heinz and his "57" varieties, it was just fifty seven years ago, to the day and hour that this story was told us, that A. D. Kingsbury, one of Maury Island's oldest and best known citizens was pumping lead into the ranks of the confederates at Gun Town, Miss. Facing him were several hundred boys in gray, one of whom was Corp. D. F. Dodge, now of Seattle.

Corp. Dodge was a member of the 7th Tennessee under General Forrest. Mr. Kingsbury was a member of the 4th Iowa under General Sturgis. The battle of Gun Town was fought June 10, 1864. In the engagement we find the "Johnny Rebs" were victorious, yet the federalist army numbered 3,600 while the confederate army only, numbered 1,600. However, one battle doesn't determine the results of a war, for the federalists were finally victorious, and the Union was preserved.

By accident, Mr. Kingsbury and Corp. Dodge met for the first time a few days ago and got to discussing the civil war. When one word followed another, both found they were engaged in the same battle. A map was drawn of the position of the two armies, and strange as it may appear, the company in which each of these two old war veterans--representing the north and south--were fighting faced each other, and was pumping lead into the ranks of the other. Neither was wounded, and here, on Vashon island, after 57 years has passed, they find themselves alive and well and with sectional differences settled, they met under the peaceful skies of Washington--and both rode in the same automobile to tell the writer of this article the story he has related.

Both men are enjoying good health. Both men are respected citizens, both men seem as happy as a couple of school kids making "puppy love" to each other and the NEWS-RECORD joins in wishing both men added years of peace and happiness, believing each fought more than half a century ago for what they thought was right and just. Long may Corp. Dodge and his wife live at 308 Hays street, Seattle and long may Citizen A. D. Kingsbury and his family enjoy the happy life they pursue at Kingsbury landing, on Maury Island!
