Clearfield Republican
Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania
What is this article about?
The Bergen Democrat editorial refutes the Chicago Tribune's claim that slavery costs $807 million, attributing the expense and bloodshed instead to abolitionism, which it calls a new 'devil' born of lust and fanaticism that has disrupted the Union's prosperity.

Cost of Abolitionism—"What Slavery
is costing," says the Chicago Tribune, quoting Mr. Secretary Chase's Report, 'is
$807,372,802.'
Nay, good sir, that is what abolitionism is
costing. Slavery was here at the birth of
the Republic, and received the protection
of the Constitution and of the laws of the
United States.
While abolitionism
is comparatively a new devil, born of
lust and fanaticism, but for which the
Union would now be prosperous and happy.
Therefore say that Abolitionism is now
costing the country almost two million of
dollars per day, besides a bottomless ocean
of blood.—Bergen Democrat.
