Demot.—Not worthy! D'ye think
yourself a good or a bad man?

Saus. M.—Bad enough, by all the
Gods.

Demot.—That's right; for our
commonwealth is tired of your virtuous,
righteous, uncorrupt men—Don't despise
what the Gods have decreed.

Saus. M.—The oracle flatters me:
How shall I have politics enough to be
a public officer, and manage govern-
ment?

Demot.—As easy as to use a needle,
and manage a sausage. Politics and Sau-
sage-making are exceedingly alike. You
are to do what you were used to do be-
fore: mix, jumble together, make a hodge-
podge, disturb and confound every thing.
Then you must cajole the people to
swallow your politics, as you used to do
the mob to swallow your sausages: you
have a rare talent for this. A false
tongue; wicked cunning; a little smat-
tering of law: in short, you have e-
very thing necessary to make a very good
politician. To preserve your place, al-
ways put on an air of familiarity—take
the popular side in all disputes, however
wrong: after that you may ride the
people as you please.
