The following sentiments by M. Condorcet, afford a hint of what might have saved the life of Louis the 16th: It is by no means necessary to observe, that if any one contributed voluntarily, and by a system steadily pursued, of pernicious politics, to the death of Louis, it is him the king of England who now appears to bewail his loss. For, he was able to have severed Prussia from Austria; to have demanded the dispersion of the emigrants, and the abstainment from war. He could by recognition of the French republic, at the end of September, have procured her a safe and honorable peace, and left her at liberty to listen only to her clemency. He has not done all this, and therefore could not but look upon the fall and death of Louis as an event useful to his secret designs. Now, what are those designs! It is not difficult to divine them. He wished not the consolidation of constitutional royalty in France, because he dreaded in a powerful nation, so near him, the example of a king having less power than himself.

Sentiments by M. Condorcet suggest the King of England contributed to Louis XVI's death through pernicious politics by not severing Prussia from Austria, demanding dispersion of emigrants, abstaining from war, or recognizing the French Republic at the end of September to procure peace; he viewed the king's fall as useful to his designs against constitutional royalty in France.
