The "People's Journal and Angus
Mail" newspaper from Scotland,
under date of September 20 recites
an unusual story of bravery on the
part of Daniel West of Montrose,
87-year-old father of Mrs.
Ed Cashel of Douglas and Mrs. Steve
Stanworth of Juneau.
Carrying also his picture the
story tells first of the rescue from
drowning of a nine-year-old boy
who had fallen into the harbor.
Due to his advanced age and growing
feebleness the old man himself suffered from exposure, in his
rescue that forced him to spend a
week in an infirmary. Two men
who went to his aid described him
as "a game old Spud and an example to the younger men on the
dockside."
The article further relates that
during his lifetime "Danny" had
saved a total of 28 persons from
drowning and had been recognized
on seven occasions by the Royal
Humane Society and once by the
Carnegie Hero Trust. His first
certificate was gained 51 years ago.
