"The Marquisate of Ruffec, in Arjomoie, with its environs, was, on the 6th instant, almost totally ruined by a violent hurricane: All the trees have been either broken or torn up by the roots, the fall of them so thick, that great numbers of oxen have been killed upon the road; several passengers have lost their lives; the corn is so much beaten down, that it is almost impossible for it to rise. The continued heavy rains have overwhelmed many houses and granaries; and other devastations done by tempest, &c. have completed the destruction of the country for some time."
