Was expected to adjourn on the 1st of January, its business being in a state to be finished on that day. The first knowledge of their proceedings will be acquired through the legislatures of the respective states that sent delegates. We know nothing further of their proceedings than is derived from an assurance entitled to every respect, that every thing has been agreed on which was proper to be done, and nothing to be repented of has been sanctioned. The Massachusetts legislature meets this month, so that the suspense will not be long and aching. If the Congress of the United States could arrive at the same despatch in business, similar energy, temperance, wisdom and firmness might be looked for which will be found in the proceedings at Hartford; but look at the men who composed the Convention and then turn your eyes upon the Egyptian Mummy, who looks as though he had been embalmed for ten centuries, or like a corpse just dug up after two months interment--look at him and his party in Congress, and then your wonder will cease. No wonder that some members of Congress take little interest in its proceedings, having come to the conviction that it is now too late to do any thing, and that it is quite unimportant what measures are adopted. We agree with them, and we believe the patient is so far gone that the whole materia medica contains not a remedy.
