LETTER

to Mr. Gardiner, Envoy Extraordinary From Great Britain, at Warsaw.

My dear Gardiner,

Since the official connection which existed between you and me seems to be near an end, and, as I have no hopes to see you again, I think it my interest to wish you a farewell, and this truly from the bottom of my heart. In the latter you will retain your place until my death; and I hope we shall be found together, in that place where righteous souls and good hearts, according to my belief, will be united for ever. Every etiquette and ceremonious custom is now totally interrupted between you and me, at least as to myself, I shall never have the trouble of observing again the Diplomatic rules and customs; but I shall always confess that I love and honor your King and your Nation--this is what I desire you to tell them. I wish also that you may always preserve a remembrance and affection towards your friend. Since I cannot any more converse with you in person, my miniature will now and then make you think on.

(Signed)

STANISLAUS AUGUSTUS, REX.

ANSWER

From Mr. Gardiner, the British Envoy to his Polish Majesty

SIRE,

The letter which your Majesty did me the honour of writing to me from Grodno, and which I received yesterday, has moved me to tears, and will constantly cause emotions within me, whenever I shall think on it. I most gratefully thank your Majesty for the Miniature you did me the honour to send me. It is doubly dear to me for coming from your hands, and from presenting me with the idea of your person.—The image of your Majesty, the excellence of your character, your distinguished kindness, towards me, and your misfortunes, shall be engraven on my heart, and never be effaced from my mind. May just Heaven in future grant to your Majesty the fate which your virtues deserve, and may he restore that calm within your soul, which is so necessary after so many storms!—I shall always pray for the welfare of your Majesty; and I entreat your Majesty occasionally to think on a person, who always felt the most profound respect, and the most perfect esteem for your Majesty. Please to accept of the assurance of my true submission to your future commands.

I have the honor to be, Sire,

Your Majesty's humble Servant,

(Signed)

Gardiner,

Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of his British Majesty.
