Brother Smith,

Though now advanced in life, I never before have written for publication, but on the present occasion my feelings rather urge it upon me. On the 5th inst., our much beloved brother Payne, the presiding elder of this district, commenced his third quarterly meeting at Tired Creek. He preached in his usual happy style, assisted by the circuit preacher and the missionary from the Gadsden mission. God owned and blessed their labours; believers were quickened and made alive, while the awakening power of the Holy Ghost went out upon the ungodly in such a manner that the meeting was protracted from day to day for ten days.— Such was the arduous labour performed on the part of the ministry, that more ministerial aid was necessary; they accordingly sent for me. and I went and laboured with them from Tuesday to the close of the meeting on Friday; and I must say that such an effort on the part of the church I had not before seen, and the result was glorious. The season of the year caused the congregation to be smaller than it otherwise would have been, but small as it was, nine were happily converted to God, and we gathered the entire congregation into the church, except three, and they were mourners at the altar. I am informed that the circuit preacher remained in the neighborhood after the close of the meeting, and at a prayer meeting, the day following, received those three, together with one or two others who had not before attended the meeting. I am glad to say that the most that joined are persons of high character, whose influence will tell upon society.
