ANN ARBOR, MICH., March 8.
During my recent visit to Mexico several persons inquired about Dr. V. C. Vaughan, who was instructor in Hardin College during the first term; in fact, he began teaching with the launching of Hardin. Dr. Vaughan came to this city in '74, graduating in '77 in the Literary Department, with chemistry as a specialty, afterwards took the degree of Ph. D. and, later, of M. D. At present, he is Prof. of physiological and pathological chemistry and associate Prof. of therapeutics and Materia Medica, is a member of the State Board of Health, has written several books pertaining to his specialties, which are doing service as text books, besides having an extensive practice. He has recently been experimenting in generating, developing, and treating consumption in the monkey tribe; and it is said that the only experiment that has ever baffled his skill was a failure to produce a pulmonary disease on a pair of cast-iron rabbits, which were sent him by a friend, who made the statement that "he knew of a kind of rabbit on which disease could not be produced, not even to further science." This gifted man, whose synonym is "wonderful," is a hard worker, and while a great favorite with all students--his influence over them being almost magical--has perfect command of his classes and when he enters the lecture room a thrill of delight pervades the atmosphere. I like Ann Arbor: the people are hospitable and social; the breadth of the University can hardly be reckoned, unless by the great army of students, I think nearly 1700, which is a significant comment on its popularity. With 94 able professors and one of the largest and best libraries in the world, which affords every facility for investigation, no wonder the student from nearly every country is drawn here. Of the climate: It is harmonious with good health. Wishing you success in all your enterprises, I am, most truly,
MRS. R. M. HERRON.
