Full Text

One very important law was enacted at the last session of the Connecticut Legislature, entitled "An act to secure the Freedom of the Press."

This law authorises the truth to be given in evidence, in all prosecutions for libels, as a justification. Only one or two of the democratic members opposed the passing of this law. The great body of them appeared, and some of them declared themselves to be, in favor of it, and it is supposed that most of them voted for it. This is mentioned to their credit, as it shews plainly their abhorrence of the falsehoods that have been told so often, and with such effect, by their party in the United States : for this Bill is copied verbatim from the law, commonly called the Sedition Law of Congress.
