The Courier's "salutatory" concludes as follows: The Courier will be independent of all political parties and factions. It does not follow from this, however, that its publishers have no opinions; but the state of American politics at the present writing is such that no upright man, however strong a partisan he may be heretofore have been, can conscientiously give either of the existing parties his unqualified support. Corruption has crept into every branch of the Government to an extent which threatens the life of Democratic institutions; and, although the party in power is naturally responsible for the greatest share in this state of things, still we cannot forget that the opposition is not stainless. Under the circumstances, therefore, we shall support men and measures for their intrinsic worth, regardless of party affiliations.
