MINER KILLED IN
A SALOON AT
CROWN KING

The Assassin Fired the Fatal Shot from the Outside and Escaped to Hills Followed by a Sheriff's Posse.

CROWN KING, Nov. 13.- At 7:30 o'clock this evening, Jock Fletcher, an old time miner and prospector of Yavapai county, was shot and almost instantly killed at the saloon of W. F. Petrie, in this place, by some one as yet unknown.

The assassin fired the fatal shot from the outside, as the steel jacket of the bullet was found imbedded in the rear wall of the saloon. The front door was open, and as the shot rang out, Fletcher threw up his hands, whirled in the direction of the open door and fell to the saloon floor, dying in a few moments.

A number of eye-witnesses to the assassination of Fletcher, who were in the saloon at the time, state that there is no doubt but that the shot came from the outside, through the front door.

Suspicion attaches to a certain party, who spent the day here drinking, and who was heard to make a number of threats against several Crown King parties, but Fletcher was not one of these. The supposition is that the assassin mistook Fletcher for another intended victim.

This party has fled to the hills, and a posse will start in pursuit tomorrow at daylight. It is expected that his arrest will be accomplished before another day passes.

Justice of the Peace Esser is here from Harrington, and will at once impanel a coroner's jury to investigate the crime.

The body of Fletcher still lies upon the saloon floor, face downward, in a pool of blood, and it is impossible, until after the inquest, to ascertain the nature of his fatal wound, but it is thought he was shot in the chest.

The murdered man was well liked by everybody who knew him, and had not a known enemy in this part of the country.
