Boxing's Best

NEW YORK- George Nicholson, who "survived" 1,500 rounds of sparring with Joe Louis when the Brown Bomber was at the peak of his amazing power, is named as "the best sparring partner in the history of boxing" by sportswriter Harold Rosenthal writing in the current issue of REAL Magazine.

Nicholson was paid at the rate of $25 dollars per round to help Louis get into shape for several title defenses, the article reveals. "He furnished highly intelligent opposition for he was able to mimic the styles of the champion's forthcoming opponents, and he worked unceasingly to eliminate any weakness in the champion's armament"

He is remembered by the thousands of fans who followed Louis' career, by the many thousands of GI's who watched him box exhibitions all over the globe, and by the hundreds of people who make their living in boxing - the managers, trainers and the fighters themselves, Says REAL. As Louis' opponent, he unquestionably absorbed, rolled with and picked off blows that floored dozens of Louis victims. Yet, says the article, the only time he appeared in a main-event lost a 10-round decision to a "hacker" named Buddy Knox.

The article points out that Nicholson also lost what he terms an "unpopular decision" to Abn Simon. He had to wait five years for revenge and then he experienced it vicariously when Louis knocked the 250-pound Simon through the ropes in Detroit.

"Nicholson is a big, friendly and courteous man who lives with his family in a brand-new housing project in the lower Bronx section of New York City," the article in REAL concludes "He is gainfully employed and is in much better condition than 999 men out of 1,000 forty years old "
