A CONTRAST

In significant contrast with the conscienceless fight being waged to the administration by a minority of President Wilson's own party is the attitude of the leading Republicans of the United States senate in support of the president's policy touching the canal toll issue. Statesmanship is seldom brought into sharper conflict with demagoguism than here.

Five of the seven Republican members of the senate committee on foreign relations, which is considering the tolls repeal bill have placed themselves unreservedly on record as favoring the measure urged by Mr. Wilson. The five see no politics in the bill; they cannot conceive that it involves any principle of party faith. They are with the president because they believe he is right. For a statesman that is always sufficient.

There are five among the very ablest men in the senate, regardless of party. Henry Cabot Lodge, Elihu Root, Theodore E. Burton, Porter J. McCumber and George Sutherland--all are lawyers of long experience in the public service men and students who are wont to face big questions with the simple purpose of finding the truth.

Jingoism has no chance to succeed against the combined wisdom and decency of such senators as these, and scores of others of both parties who can distinguish honesty from trickery are willing to let their votes follow their conscience.

President Wilson is just now the target for as unprincipled an attack as has disgraced the pages of political history in years. His enemies on the tolls issue are resorting to every mean device known to guerrilla warfare. They have little regard for truth or for decency; impelled by various unworthy motives, they seek to destroy the administration and its chief.

Such tactics cannot win. They will strengthen, not weaken, President Wilson in the public estimation. Mud-slinging inevitably reacts against the slinger. The public loves truth, and resents its perversion.

The tolls repeal bill will be passed by the senate. The fewer hours wasted in its discussion there the better.--Cleveland Plain Dealer.
