Since it is known that the law and order party of Mississippi has been defeated, and the State has thereby been disgraced, it is the duty of all who love justice, and desire to live up to the precepts of the great father of our republic, to set about devising ways and means to retrieve the character of the State, and to prevent the return of such a catastrophe as we have recently witnessed.
Our plan would be to foster education. Give the people light and knowledge. Improve the mind and morals of the rising generation, so that reason and the higher sentiments may have their proper sway over the baser passions. A complete and efficient system of public instruction is necessary to the attainment of this great result.
The poor should have the most ample means provided for their education. Every child in the State, both male and female, should be able to read and write, and have in their possession such books as are best adapted to the improvement and expansion of the mind, and to the development and preservation of the moral sentiments.
We hope our Legislature at its next sitting will take immediate and active steps in this great work. If it should fail to do its duty in this matter, then private associations should be organized in each neighborhood, whose object should be to improve the mind and better the moral condition of the youth of the State by the establishment of schools.
