Cannot be practiced so. When the guard lay object—The report of the gun woke the whole of the guard and officers of the son, who soon rushed out to what was the matter. On accosting the sentinel on duty in front of the prison which the prisoners were confined, had done, Detectives J. L. Wootters and [Lempel-Pover?] of the third went into the prison to find out what had been done. Finding that no one was hurt, and all necessary to be quiet, Wootters poked his head out of one of the windows to inform the guard outside. Private Jordan of Company D, Anthony's battalion, taking him for one of the prisoners, immediately fired at him, the ball entering his right eye and lodging against the skull in the back part of the unfortunate man's head. He fell to the floor, exclaiming 'My God, I'm killed.' Surgeon was immediately procured, but it is still impossible that he can recover. He was tenderly taken to his residence where last yesterday afternoon he was still alive, though evidently sinking. Mr. Wootters has been a resident of this city from childhood, and, we believe, was at one time engaged in the mercantile business here. At the prison he was regarded as one amongst the best detective officers there, and was much respected by all who were associated with him. He has a family. The sentinel who shot him seems overwhelmed with distress, and declares that under no circumstances would he have fired had he not believed that it was a prisoner deceiving him at the window. The guards have strict instructions to shoot any prisoner who will not obey them when ordered to go from the windows.
