Full Text

Almost two months ago France proposed to the United States that the two nations enter into an agreement to never under any circumstances go to war with each other. Up to this writing the Republican administration which is managing the affairs of the country, and posing as ardent advocates of peace, has not acknowledged the receipt of the proposal. Why this lack of diplomatic courtesy toward a friendly nation has not been explained. Some say that if such an agreement was entered into, France could repudiate her war debt and Uncle Sam would be barred from using his guns and young men to force a settlement. In other words, Mr. Coolidge and his advisors and Wall Street campaign financiers think more of the dollars coming into their tills and the country's treasury than they do of peace and the lives of the young men. Dollars versus men, the men lose with the Republicans. Democrats, we have always insisted, are the gods of the people.
