MIDOCEAN RESCUE. The Normannia Takes Twenty-nine Persons From a Sinking Ship

London. April 5.-The Normannia arrived at Southampton at 2:30 this morning. She reports having rescued the crew of the British ship Arno in midocean three days out from New York. The Arno was sighted. with a heavy list, and signaling for help. The captain asked the Normannia to take off the crew, the ship being expected to sink. The rescue was commenced in heavy seas. The first boat sent to the Arno capsized, but no lives were lost. Other boats were sent out, and finally, after hazardous and thrilling incidents, the crew of 29 men and women and a baby were rescued. The boats could only approach within 50 yards of the Arno, and the men were rescued with a life buoy line, all of them jumping into the sea. The baby was dropped overboard in a canvas bag and was hauled in this way into the boat. The waves were running 30 feet high. The rescue occupied eight hours. and the last boatload was brought in after dark. A sailor jumped overboard and swam alongside a woman till the boats picked her up.
