Issues Statement and Endorses Municipal Improvement League—a Misunderstanding Corrected

Wheeling, W. Va., April 6.

To the Editor of the Intelligencer:

Sir: In view of the fact that a misunderstanding seems to have been created, I desire to submit the following statement:

In your issue of April 5th, a card appeared signed by the Municipal Improvement League. The same card was published in other papers. Reading this card I was led to believe that the Municipal Improvement League was organized for the purpose and with the intent of opposing, in some manner, labor interests in the City of Wheeling. In that card I was quoted as saying that I had no inquiries from manufacturers for sites in Wheeling and vicinity. In your issue of this morning I published a card intended to correct what I thought was a mis-quotation of myself. Today I met part of the General Committee of the Municipal Improvement League consisting of the following gentlemen: Geo. E. Sufel, Geo. M. Snook, W. E. Stone, A. L. Meyer, Geo. W. Lutz and A. W. Paull and with them discussed at length the purpose of the league and its relation to the labor of the city. I am satisfied from the statements made from these gentlemen that they have no intention to oppose lawful labor interests or to antagonize labor in any of its honorable and worthy aspirations. I am convinced that the purposes of the league are worthy and I believe that the understanding which seems to have been spread in the community to some extent, namely, that the league is unfriendly to labor, does its members an injustice.

Every law abiding citizen expects laws to be equally enforced against all men, and as a representative of labor I can heartily endorse this movement.
