HERDERS HAVE DIFFICULTY PROTECTING REINDEER FROM WOLVES IN THE BROAD PASS

Reindeer herders have declared war on the wolf which has followed the caribou run into the Cantwell and Broad Pass regions, says the Anchorage Times.

While the wolves have done but little damage thus far, the herders are bending every effort towards driving them out, because they know that, a little later on, when other game gets scarce, the pack will naturally start killing the reindeer and caribou.

Five wolves were seen in one pack near one of the large herds of reindeer, recently, by native herders, although they did not seem to be bothering the deer. Wolves have also been seen in the country north of Wasilla and in McKinley Park.

This is the first time in years that any great number of wolves have appeared so far south.

They seem to be increasing in numbers in recent years.
