Examination of the Schools under the care of the Greenwood Association.

Board Examination witnessed with great interest and satisfaction: the various exercises of the several institutions always claim admiration. It is always difficult to select particular instances from this. In our report we will follow the order of the examination, and begin with the Female School. In this department, classes in English Grammar, Geography, Arithmetic, Natural, Moral, and Mental Philosophy, Botany, Astronomy, and the French Language were examined, in all of which the prompt and ready answers of the young Ladies and Misses, happily illustrated by familiar experiments upon the handsome and excellent Philosophical apparatus belonging to the Association, entirely satisfied the Board of their proficiency, and the attainments and ability of their Instructress Miss Brown. The Board are anxious to avoid invidious distinctions, and yet while awarding that distinguished praise to the more advanced young Ladies, due to their scholarship and polished deportment, they cannot pass without a special notice the remarkable progress of several very youthful classes in the first elements of Geography and Parley's History. In French the pronunciation was good and the translations accurate.

In the intervals of the classes, the exercises were pleasantly varied by Musical performances on the Piano, accompanied with the cultivated tones of human voice, in which all the young Ladies joined, under the direction of the tasteful Mistress of the department of Music, Mrs. Potter, of whose success too much cannot be said.

The entire day was thus passed to the evident satisfaction and flattering approval of a numerous, refined, and delighted audience.

The examination of the English Male Academy, which occupied the second day was also gratifying to the Board and the patrons of the Institution. The classes generally manifested a familiar acquaintance with their studies, which bears testimony to the ability and industry of their Teacher, Mr. Potter. The Board were also much pleased with the declamation of the pupils in this department.

The third and fourth days were chiefly spent in the examination of the Classical Academy, and the Board with pleasure repeat the high and just encomiums which have been so often bestowed by preceding Boards of examination, upon this department of the Greenwood Institutions. The young gentlemen sustained their examinations upon the Sciences and Languages in a manner highly creditable to themselves and thus gave additional testimony to the eminent qualifications of their Teacher, Mr. Leslie, the Principal of the Classical Academy. At the close of the examination the audience were favored with a chaste and highly interesting address by Colonel Trotti, of Barnwell, in accordance with the invitation of the Board of Trustees.

Signed by request of the Board of Examination,

EDWIN CATER.
