A letter from Norfolk, dated May 17, to a gentleman at Baltimore, mentions, that the letter of marque ship Mary of 18 guns and 50 men, had arrived there; after having captured in the Gulf Stream, a French brig of 10 guns and 117 men, all mulattoes or negroes, except the Lieutenant, who is a native of Barnstable, Cape Cod.

The engagement lasted 2 hours--9 Americans were killed and wounded, and 17 Frenchmen. Her name is the Generoux, of Guadaloupe--had no commission--was loaded with military implements and stores. Many letters were thrown overboard from her, but one was found, addressed to an eminent person in Georgia, and this has been sent to the Secretary of State.
