THE TERRITORIAL FAIR.
The Territorial Fair began Monday at Helena, and there has been some good racing and apparently a more than usual display of exhibits in exposition departments. The Montana militia, ten companies, of 305 men, went into their First Annual Encampment for four days on the Fair grounds, concluding their exercises to-day. Some of the companies are spoken of as having attained a fair proficiency in drill, and these annual encampments will rouse a spirit of emulation that will result in increased attendance and greater proficiency. The commissariat was not equal to expectations or deserts, and elicited not only unfavorable remarks but a break for the town restaurants. Otherwise the encampment appears to have been successful.
In the three minute class, Tuesday, Fantasie won the $500, taking the first, third and fourth heats, in 2:31, 2:29 and 2:34, against D. K. W., Dennis Ryan and Carrie C. We have not space this issue to give the races in detail, but notice that Nevada, bred by Kohrs & Bielenberg, by Regent, dam Miss Ella, won the 3-year old Derby stakes against Oregon and Caloma in 2:39. Marcus Daly's Senator won in the 2:27 class Wednesday against Ollie, Carrie Belle, Ida D, Cottonwood Chief, John F. Contractor and Bradshaw in three straight heats. Time 2:26, 2:24 and 2:25, which is pretty near down to what the "crack" horses made at Butte and Deer Lodge. To-morrow the free-for-all occurs, when the latter ought to have an opportunity to redeem themselves.
