Periodicals.—It will be seen that the Providence Patriot of yesterday, corroborates our statement in reference to the conduct of the Agent of the North American Review. The other papers, if called upon, would unquestionably make the same statement. In reference to this and the other reviews, we would observe, that our complaints of the Agent have not arisen from a desire to procure those works, as we have daily access to them in the Arcade News Room; but to give what we consider important information to their publishers, and to assign some reasons for the difficulty that has attended their circulation in this place, and the indifference of the Press towards them.

In our first allusion to this subject, agent was employed in the plural number. We are satisfied that so far as this might have applied to Mr. A. S. Beckwith, he is not in fault for withholding notices from the papers. The only periodical for which he is agent is the American Quarterly, and he has no instructions to furnish a copy of it for advertising. This, therefore, is the result of the injudicious policy pursued by the Publishers. That Periodical, however, either from this cause or some other, is little known or cared for, in this community.

We noticed in the Daily Advertiser an article in relation to American periodical publications, which we consider to be correct, and ought to be accepted by the editors and publishers, as a good and sufficient reason, why those works are not noticed by the papers in this town. For several years we received them at this office, and paid for them rather more than double the subscription price in advertising: in addition to which we generally noticed them in our paper. We do not know whether the proprietors of the work ordered their advertisements stopped in our paper—but owing to a difficulty which grew up between the Agent and us, about the time of the discontinuance, we are inclined to believe it was his own unauthorized act.—Our neighbor of the American is not always correct, (particularly in his politics,) but when he is right, we are willing to bear testimony in his favor.—Patriot.
