Some idea may be formed of the value of
Louisiana to the western States, independent
of its own intrinsic value, from the fact, that
the amount of produce taken to New Orleans
from above, has increased in three years
more than five millions of dollars. It is not
improbable, that in less than 20 years, the ex-
ports of domestic produce from the Missis-
sippi alone, will be greater in amount than
the gross exports of the United States in
1800. How important is it to possess such
an avenue to the ocean! and how fortunate
that we obtained it without a war, and at a
comparatively small expense.
